Bharat Net Project Mobile Internet Data Scheme

BharatNet shall be a project of national importance to establish, by 2017, a highly scalable network infrastructure accessible on a non-discriminatory basis, to provide on demand, affordable broadband connectivity for all households and on demand capacity to all institutions, to realise the vision of Digital India, in partnership with States and Digital Gujarat the private sector.

The entire project is being funded by Universal service Obligation Fund (USOF), which was set up for improving telecom services in rural and remote areas of the country. The objective is to facilitate the delivery of e-governance, e-health, e-education, e-banking, Internet and other services to the rural India.

The BharatNet project, earlier known as National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN), was initiated in 2011 and has already missed several deadlines. The project was to be funded by Universal Service Obligation Fund with the aim of providing broadband connectivity to over 2 lakh gram panchayats (GPs). Bharat Net seeks to connect all of India’s households, particularly in rural areas, through broadband by 2017, forming the backbone of the government’s ambitious Digital India Digital Gujarat.
